SDG13: Climate action
General objective: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact.
What is Royal FloraHolland doing to achieve this goal?
Royal FloraHolland is taking action. The examples below show how hard the horticulture industry is working on new technologies and products and how big the impact of these innovations is on sustainability. We want to share our knowledge and experience. And inspire and encourage all companies, in and beyond our sector, to participate.
Climate agreement - The worldwide Paris Agreement of late 2015 set the tone for a global focus on a drastic reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050. The European Union translates this into European and national obligations. As a result, the Dutch government has an objective to reduce CO2 emissions by 49% by 2030 compared to 1990. The implementation of this objective is laid out in the Climate Agreement 2030.
Glastuinbouw Nederland established the vision Climate-Neutral Glasshouse Horticulture in 2017. This is the foundation and the starting point for the agreements to be made in the Climate Agreement.
Improving CO2 footprint - Our direct CO2 emissions are linked to the energy consumption. We are taking ambitious action to improve this CO2 footprint.
The Green Agenda - Urbanization and climate change require new solutions for the quality of life in cities. Plants have positive effects on biodiversity, climate, welfare and air quality. This makes cities better places to live and work. This means that plants are more than just beautiful. The Green Agenda, in collaboration with Wageningen University and other knowledge institutions, gathered evidence about the positive impacts of greenery in the living environment. The results are used in the industry by members, growers' associations and customers. We are also initiating and investigating the contribution of plants together with growers and other parties.
Environmental footprint calculations - Together with GroentenFruit Huis and Wageningen Economic Research and with co-financing by Topsector Tuinbouw& Uitgangsmaterialen, Royal FloraHolland is working on a uniform standard for environmental footprint calculations for horticulture products that is accepted throughout the chain.
